Goldring Student Centre at Victoria University (University of Toronto) goes with Bioroof Systems Modular Green Roof.

The Goldring Student Centre, a three-storey building designed by renowned Toronto-based Moriyama & Teshima Architects, creates a vibrant hub of student activity in the heart of the Victoria University campus. The renovation and expansion project doubles the current space of the Wymilwood student union building, originally designed by Eric Arthur in the 1950s, with the addition of meeting rooms, offices for student government and clubs, a renovated café, a two-storey lounge, an assembly space, a newly defined quadrangle, and the addition of much-needed spaces for commuter students. It will give students, especially those that don’t live on campus, the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities, socialize with friends, and engage in all the activities that make for a well-rounded student experience.

For both students and the design team, it was important to maintain the quality and integrity of the building, especially as an environmentally responsible building. Furthermore, the Goldring Student Centre joins a diverse and impressive legacy of Victoria University buildings, from neo-gothic Burwash Hall, to Richardsonian Romanesque Old Vic, to the contemporary Isabel Bader Theatre. Only the best materials will do for a building that exemplifies architectural heritage and student life at Victoria University. That’s why the green roof contractor turned to Bioroof Systems to provide a quality system for their green roof design. The roof uses the Bio-Module modular system and a pre-grown Sedum Succulent Blend custom selected for Victoria University to reflect the college’s school colours, scarlet and gold. The green roofs on the building were an important feature of the building to demonstrate the University’s commitment to truly sustainable and high performance solutions, not just ‘green washes’. Certified Bioroof installers Snips Landscape and Nursery handled the installation of green roof components.

“At Bioroof, we have a long history of working on iconic Canadian green roofs.” said Bioroof president Rick Buist, “Time and time again, designers come to us for the roofs that really matter. We’re proud to be the go-to suppliers for high quality, high performance green roof solutions.”
