TTC’s new Maintenance and Storage Facility, located near Ashbridges Bay at the corner of Leslie and Lake Shore, began construction in spring of this year. Built to Toronto Green Development Standards, the design of the facility strives for the highest quality of sustainable practices, from the ecologically restorative landscape design, to the modern and accessible building, right up to its 100,000 square foot green roof. When completed, this Bio-Module modular green roof system with a bed of desert succulent plantings will rank as one of the largest green roofs in Canada!
The new maintenance and storage facility will house 100 of TTC’s new fleet of 204 low-floor streetcars, which will begin arriving in 2013 and provide transit users with reliable and accessible transit. The streetcars will include quieter, low-floor access for persons with mobility challenges, enhanced comfort and reduced crowding in larger vehicles, faster boarding with multiple entrances and a new far collection system, accommodation for bikes, air conditioning in the summer, and in general more environmentally-friendly with the use of L.E.D. lighting and A.C. traction motors to increase the energy efficiency and use of vehicles. The new streetcars will also carry almost twice as many people as the current TTC streetcars. The new streetcars will have leading-edge clean technology for better reliability and performance.
TTC is committed to providing a reliable high-performance transit service, and this same dedication to high-performance extends to the design of their facilities. That is why the roofing contractor, Triumph Roofing Inc., went with a Bioroof system to ensure the highest quality of green roof. Stormwater management and restorative landscape design are key principles in the landscape design and those same standards for performance were upheld to the green roof.
Bioroof Systems is pleased to be selected for this iconic green roof project. The TTC Ashbridges Bay green roof joins Bioroof’s strong portfolio of innovative and iconic green roofs, including the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, the Manitoba Hydro Place Head Office in Winnipeg, the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa, the Williams Engineering Building in Edmonton, the National Defense Ministry offices in Gatineau, Quebec, and the Covenant House Youth Shelter in Toronto. Since 2006, over a million square feet of Bioroof green roofs have been installed.
